Stormy character

I have been devoting time each day to work on something, only about 4-6 hours, sometimes more when there is a project I really want to get done. Whether it is a sketch, a submission for DesignCrowd, a blog post, or reading about glaciers for my research project, or planning out the thesis project I will need to complete before I graduate from UMaine.

I think it is important to take advantage of time I have during this summer, and still enjoy it of course!

This character is done on a nice grey toned paper. After a pencil sketch I inked her with fine tip pens and then used a black colored pencil  to shade her face and used the wonderful tool sharpie paint extra fine point white pen to add the highlights.

She is meant to look fierce and stormy

I like the character just in grey-tone so I photographed her at this stage before adding purple hair

A different version from photoshop, as is the figure at the top with mermaid sea-green hair

Longboard

Most days I longboard to get around the UMaine campus. This summer I decided to decorate the bottom with markers, pen, and acrylic paint. Before doing this, I sanded the surface, and then afterwards put a clear finish back over.

Ice Spidey

Storm's prowess over the elements + Batman's genius

Sometimes people have a strong preference for Marvel or DC, but I honestly love characters and stories from both. When I was home at the beginning of the summer I created these three superheroes by pairing a character from DC with one from Marvel. I chose them based on the people I did them for. Above is a Storm - Batman combo I drew for my sister, and I also did a Spiderman - Ice girl for myself, and a Green Lantern - Wolverine combination for Jackson. I'm sure it is a blast coming up with your own superheroes as well!

Spiderman's web + Ice's control over the snow and ice

Green lantern's marvelous ring + Wolvering fearsome claws
Megan brought home mini- canvases (about 2 by 3 inches) and these are 2 of the 5 that I painted.

Funny- looking fella (the smile..?)

I have done these funny guys - faceless, with fiery hair - for years. Who are they, though?

Spinning Threads to your Throne

I am home for summer vacation, my first year at UMaine completed, and I will be able to photograph and post a bunch of my new artwork soon!

This would be an awesome tattoo!

Nordic Skiing Comic

I am back at UMaine, the first classes of the spring semester begin today! Over winter break I drew a nordic ski-related comic for my boyfriend Jackson who competed in high school. This is based on one of his last ski races that he told me about. I used comic strip boards and double sided Blick markers!

Book Illustration & Boston Marathon

The Guest

I got this T-shirt from Threadless recently, I thought it was a very cool design! I think that the guest is probably the astronaut in this situation.
Some of my favorite artwork is illustrations in books, I have always loved Brett Helquist's work, particularly in A Series of Unfortunate Events. He has a distinct style, and uses a lot of diagonal lines and crosshatching

I also love Keith Thompson's art in the steam-punk (Clanker) vs. animal hybrid (Darwinist) series, Leviathan.

The Boston Marathon was an exciting watch the other day, of course I was cheering on the more well known Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher, but I was extremely excited to see Michigan's Desiree Davila place second! It was an exciting race for girls and guys, and of course a new men's world record (hopefully it isn't discredited!) of 2:03:02, incredible! Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya pulled ahead of fellow countryman Moses Mosop to win by .03 minutes and get this time!
